Tim Berners-Lee, one of the founders of the so-called world wide web, sells the original source code with which he created the web in 1989. The code will be auctioned next week, international auction house Sotheby’s reports.

The code will be auctioned as NFT, a non-replaceable token. These NFTs are digital files that are linked to a digital ‘something’, such as a tweet, image or video. The NFT states who owns it.

The auction starts on June 23. Interested parties can make an offer for a week. The price starts at 1,000 dollars, but it is expected that this will rise considerably. This also happened before, for example, when a photo of a girl posing in front of a burning house was sold, also known as the ‘Disaster Girl’ meme.

The NFT consists of four elements: the code, an animation video, a letter from Berners-Lee and a digital poster. Proceeds go to charities that support Berners-Lee and his wife.
