The European Commission (EC) announced on Wednesday that it will set up a European cyber unit. The Joint Cyber Unit should stimulate cooperation between European cybersecurity experts and set up teams that can assist Member States in the event of a large-scale cyber attack.

The unit is being set up due to growing concerns about the cybersecurity of EU Member States. The committee wants to establish a platform at the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity in Brussels where the EU and its Member States can pool their knowledge about and weapons against cyber attacks.

The investments needed to set up the Common Cyber Unit will be provided by the Commission, mainly through the Digital Europe programme. Additional contributions, for example needed to support cyber defence, can come from the European Defense Fund.

From June 2022, the unit must be able to be deployed
