A US road safety organization has opened a total of 30 investigations into Tesla accidents in which the self-driving function was suspected. A total of ten people are said to have died since 2016, Reuters news agency reported.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shared a list with details of all 30 crashes with the news agency on Thursday. Earlier, the organization had already announced that it was investigating a number of Tesla accidents, but it had never been clear before that there were so many issues involved.
Some of the investigations are still ongoing, while others have already been completed. According to the NHTSA, the self-driving function was not the cause of the crash in at least three of the thirty cases. It is not clear how many accidents are still being investigated.
The automaker declined to comment to the news agency, but Tesla chief Elon Musk has always said the self-driving feature is safe when used properly.
In April, two more men were killed in a Tesla crash in the US state of Texas. After the accident, the police assumed that the self-driving function of the car was switched on. However, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) thinks this was not the case.
